The New Sanctuary Movement

On August 26, 2014, after much discussion around a devotional led by Pastor Eric, the session of UPC voted to offer sanctuary to Luis Lopez Acabal, thus becoming the third faith community in Arizona to offer sanctuary to an undocumented resident in the few months prior. In so doing, UPC entered into an ancient tradition of offering refuge to those whom the church deems undeserving of harsh or inappropriate punishment. In scripture we are called to “welcome the stranger” among us, and seek to enter into places and situations where injustice is happening.

This decision was not unanimous, nor is UPC unanimous in supporting this venture. However, our congregation does hold on to the value that families should not be torn apart.
