Holy Week 2017

University Presbyterian ChurchIn this season of Lent we have walked with Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem—the center of socio-political, religious, and economic power in Israel during the first century. It has been a journey of wonder, discipleship, and listening for the Word of God through the pages of our holy scripture.

All of this is to prepare us to fully invest ourselves in living out the lessons of Holy Week (Jesus’ last week starting with his protest march into Jerusalem as a subversive and powerless king going against the power and might of Rome’s governor, Pilate; to sharing in his last Passover meal with his friends on Maundy Thursday. On Friday, we join Jesus in his being executed on a cross for his anti-imperial actions that threatened the balance of power of the Jewish leadership who collaborated with Rome. On this journey we remember the life of peace and compassionate justice to which God is calling us every day. Jesus’ resurrection is a sign of the grace born in us and resurrected within our hearts when we embody that grace in our lives, especially when it comes to the most vulnerable among us—the ones whom God especially loves.

Please join us during Holy Week (April 9th through 16th) and steep yourself into the richness of the passion of Christ.

Sunday, April 9th — Palm Sunday (9:30 a.m. worship)
As we enter the sacred space and attitude of worship, we remember his followers who celebrated Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the heart of power in Jesus’ world, only to abandon him a few days later. Jesus came to share a lifestyle forged by God’s love and framed by the teachings of mutual care and compassion. Come as we celebrate this great and wonderful king, like no other on earth.

Monday-Friday, April 10th-14th— Morning Prayer (7:00 a.m.)
UPC Memorial Garden

Each morning of Holy Week we begin our day with prayer services in the Memorial Garden at UPC (adjacent to the parking lot). These gatherings are intentionally brief (about 30 minutes), just enough for our hearts and minds to take in the significance of the week, and set our hearts on God’s vision for our lives. We will walk with Jesus through his final week as shared with us in Mark’s gospel. Come listen. Come pray. Come give thanks.

Thursday, April 13 — Maundy Thursday Communion Service (7:00 p.m.)
Mission del Sol Presbyterian Church
1565 E Warner Rd, Tempe, AZ 85284 (Click for directions)
We will join our sister congregation at Mission del Sol Presbyterian Church to honor Jesus’ final evening with his disciples. Maundy means “mandate” or “command,” as Jesus taught his disciples to share in his fellowship of grace and forgiveness every time they broke bread together. On this night we gather to remember Jesus’ teaching about solidarity with God and one another. (Parents are encouraged to bring their children so they may share in this important reminder of God’s grace in Jesus. We know they may make some noise, so please come!).

Sunday, April 16th — Easter Sunrise Service (6:00 a.m.)
Neil G. Giuliano Park

Just east of Tempe Beach Park. Free parking is available at 80 E. Rio Salado Pkwy, then walk between the buildings toward Tempe Town Lake (Click for directions)

An open communion service (all are invited to participate) just after sunrise on Sunday morning right on Tempe Town Lake, celebrating the gift of new life revealed in the resurrection hope of Jesus Christ.
